"Taking a line for a walk" Paul Klee
This quote by Swiss artist Paul Klee has always fascinated me. My work, which ranges from sculptures and wall panels to framed canvases, wearable art and jewellery is an experiment in where to 'take the line'. I believe that every thread is precious and has the potential to inspire a new piece of work.
I am a Swiss/British contemporary textile artist living and practising just outside Plymouth on the edge of Dartmoor, UK. The local environment and in particular gardens are a huge influence on my work which combines both traditional skills and modern techniques to create unusual textiles of exceptional quality.
I design and make all my own work under the name Doris Smith-Rolli Textiles. My felt is made from vividly dyed Merino wool with fleece from local sheep. Other work combines machine embroidery and recycled materials including hand dyed fabrics, paper fibres, wire and found objects to create a contemporary and distinctive range of textiles. Every piece is unique and definitely not for shrinking violets!
